The attempt here is clearly for JCPenney to brand itself as America’s department store. Trouble is, I haven’t stepped foot in a JCPenney since shopping for my girl scout uniform like 15 years ago (and I only remember this because it required a trip to the sketchy mall). Marring the emblem of our nation surely is not be the hook to draw me back. You cannot DO this. Design a cheap imitation of the flag and then slap your logo in the corner?! Implying that your logo is in any way qualified to exist in the revered space where our 50 state stars reside. It feels, to me, deeply sacrilegious. And I can’t believe any retailer, let alone a sub par one like JCPenney, felt they had the right to pull this stunt.
